Bookmundi – the world’s first online booking portal to offset carbon emissions for all its travel packages

Bookmundi then invests in carbon reduction projects around the world to offset the CO2 emissions of each trip. Some of these projects include planting 8 million trees in Colombia, investing in a conservation project in the Peruvian Amazon, and developing solar power in Turkey to replace fossil fuels.

Copenhagen, Zeeland, Denmark – From today, Bookmundi, the global online travel portal, will automatically offset the carbon footprint generated by all tours booked through its website – a world first for online package travel booking platforms .

The initiative aims to make travel more environmentally friendly and attractive to eco-friendly customers. It applies to all CO2 emitted for the more than 15,000 travel packages that Bookmundi currently offers for sale online in more than 135 countries.

Working with professional climate consultants based in the UK, Bookmundi has developed a system to calculate carbon emissions per traveler per trip, from the place of departure of the trip to its place of arrival. Everything from accommodation, transportation, meals, and scheduled activities while on tour is tracked since greenhouse gas emissions from package tours come primarily from these four sources. The company has made large-scale calculations possible by labeling over 250,000 data points and processing that data through machine learning and data processing algorithms, helping to dynamically calculate the CO2 footprint per lap.

Bookmundi then invests in carbon reduction projects around the world to offset the CO2 emissions of each trip. Some of these projects include planting 8 million trees in Colombia, investing in a conservation project in the Peruvian Amazon, and developing solar power in Turkey to replace fossil fuels.

Bookmundi sells package tours of all kinds of durations, but as an example, in carbon offsetting for an average 8-day tour available on the Bookmundi booking platform, 16 trees would have to be planted over a year to cover the CO2 impact. The company has already pre-purchased the necessary carbon credits to ensure that all tour bookings are offset from the outset.

The travel and tourism industry has long been criticized as a big contributor to greenhouse gases. Tourism is estimated to account for 8% of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Currently, some travel agencies offer tourists the option of paying extra to have their trip or tour carbon offset, but Bookmundi’s initiative takes responsibility as a business, covering all costs and by default the carbon offset for all tour bookings. If all online tour operators and travel agents followed this path, it would result in significant investments in renewable energy and carbon offset projects around the world.

CEO and Founder of Bookmundi, Rasmus Juul-Olsen: “Everyone has a responsibility to help fight climate change, including online travel agents and booking portals.

“In an ideal world, given that the travel industry accounts for a significant share of CO2 emissions, it should not actually be possible or legal to sell a tour without carbon offsetting.

“As a traveler, you don’t have to worry about additional costs, as carbon offsetting is already built into the cost of every trip and we always offer a best price guarantee for all the tours we sell.

“Customers finally have the choice to purchase a carbon offset around the world package tour.

“The good news is that a future will soon emerge where markets and tour operators, and in principle any tourism-related service provider, should shift to more sustainable travel and services, not just to help combat the climate change, but to stay competitive and survive as a business.

Juul-Olsen sees this initiative as the way of the future for the travel industry and hopes that more international and local booking engines and markets will also join the carbon offset efforts to cover their bookings.

Bookmundi offsets CO2 emissions on behalf of over 1,500 tour operators, local and global, offering over 1 million departures through over 15,000 adventures and package tours on the bookmundi.com website. The company also offsets all indirect carbon emissions resulting from servers and users browsing bookmundi.com.
