Sustainability is not just a buzzword used to capture the attention of policy makers and business owners. Research has shown that climate change, almost entirely caused by human action, is already underway and having a devastating impact on our world.

The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report in 2022 that shows exactly how climate change is affecting the world’s population today. When assessing the risks associated with short-term climate change (2021 to 2040), the IPCC found that short-term global warming will cause a variety of negative environmental impacts.

The IPCC predicted more frequent extreme weather events as well as further loss of wildlife and natural ecosystems. There is also a high risk that the global temperature will reach 1.5 degrees Celsius within the next two decades if no preventive measures are taken by people and businesses.

On a positive note, adaptations to combat climate change are already being practiced. The IPCC also found that adaptation responses have positive co-benefits, highlighting the societal benefits of adaptations like better land management and building technologies.

This is especially true for hotels. When hotels adapt to environmentally friendly practices, they not only help the environment, but can also maximize efficiency.

Hotel technology and sustainability

Implementing modern building technology benefits a hotel in multiple ways. Overall, these systems increase efficiency, reduce costs associated with operations and also benefit the environment.

The impact of hotel management software

A PMS (otherwise known as a Property Management System) helps hoteliers organize and track day-to-day operations at their hotels. Property management systems simplify hotel management by automatically tracking all facets of the hotel, allowing staff to manage the hotel efficiently.

With a PMS, long gone are the days of having to manually enter arrivals or departures, manually verify that rooms were cleaned, or keep paper files of guest information and billing. A PMS can track all of this without paper or manual effort.

It goes without saying that real estate technology like a PMS is attractive to hoteliers because it dramatically increases their operational efficiency. However, applications such as PMS technology are also great for the environment.

The main reason why a PMS has a positive impact on the environment is that this software completely eliminates the need for paper in your hotel. A PMS can invoice customers digitally and send digital invoices, making paper invoices obsolete.

Additionally, since guests can book online using an integrated web-based booking tool, guests no longer need to print paper confirmations or bring paper payment information to check-in. All of this is digitally captured and stored on the PMS for secure staff access.

For hoteliers investing in a cloud-based PMS, the benefits are even greater. A cloud-based PMS allows customers to self-check-in, dramatically reducing the overhead needed to help customers check-in.

Plus, cloud-based property management systems offer features like interactive hotel maps, so your front desk no longer has to print out information sheets showing where to find the restaurant or resorts. water on the property.

The impact of online booking software

Hoteliers can take advantage of another software, called WBE (or Online Booking Engine) to allow customers to book online with ease. These applications are easy for hotels to implement and simple for guests to use. With a WBE, guests can visit the hotel’s website and easily select a room on the spot.

The WBE is integrated into the establishment’s management system. So when a customer books online, the PMS is automatically updated for staff to review. Plus, the two-way integration also updates the website as rooms are booked, to make sure you’re never overbooked.

Hotel technology, such as an online booking engine, can have a huge impact on the success of your hotel. It takes the manual labor of tracking and reviewing hotel reservations out of hand. The WBE streamlines and automates this process for more robust operational success.

Additionally, when customers book online, rather than over the phone or in person, all the documents they need for check-in can be emailed. This significantly reduces paper waste for individual consumers. Additionally, a WBE makes the front desk staff’s job less stressful, as they no longer need to manually track incoming reservations and worry about accidental overbookings.

A sustainable workplace is a place where people feel healthy and happy, so applications of hospitality technology, like a WBE, can make your workplace more sustainable by improving the mental well-being of staff at work. .

Another web-based reservation technology tool that every hotel should have is a Channel Manager (CM). Channel managers oversee hotel listings on several different websites. To be a successful hotel today, you need to list your available rooms on multiple channels, such as OTAs like Expedia.com.

Manually tracking this would be a headache and nearly impossible. Luckily, channel managers automate the job for you. CM automatically updates OTAs, hotel website and internal PMS every time a reservation is made, on any channel.

Being able to list your open rooms across multiple channels will increase occupancy and revenue. Plus, since the CM seamlessly updates all channels, you can be sure you’ll never be overbooked. As bookings increase, you can ensure with a CM that your hotel can sustainably meet the needs of all guests without neglecting anything.

New hotel technologies, like OTAs and CMs, allow hoteliers to advertise on a range of channels without harming the environment.

Characteristics of sustainable building

In addition to technologies that make hotel operations smoother and more environmentally friendly than ever, the physical characteristics of hotels are also undergoing sustainable transformations. Among the latest technological trends in the hospitality industry, a move towards “smart” hotel rooms is underway.

By using technologies such as smart thermostats, hoteliers are making it easier for guests to access their room temperature controls, while saving on utility costs. Smart thermostats, like Google Nest, allow users to set certain temperature settings for specific times of the day and access their temperature controls remotely.

There are also sustainable options for bedding and linens. Many companies now offer sheets made from more sustainable materials, such as hemp or recycled fibers. Your guests won’t be able to tell, but the environment will thank you.

Hotels can dispense with providing guests with free bottled water (a common practice) by adding technological water dispensers on their property. Some water dispensers now even offer sparkling or flavored drinks, from a single tap, which will improve the customer experience and reduce plastic waste.

Conclusion

A shift towards sustainability is inevitable if we want to work for a healthier planet. Numerous initiatives, such as the LEED building certificate, already encourage hoteliers to take measures to make their buildings more energy efficient.

If you want your hotel to thrive in the modern climate-centric world, it’s time to add hotel technology to it. Not only can technology like management software help reduce wasteful practices, but it also benefits a hotel’s operational processes.

If talent acquisition is the most important thing happening today, how can we incorporate it into our business planning strategy for 2023? Do we need robots? Maybe we do, especially for mundane tasks like delivering basic items to rooms and vacuuming carpets.

But there are foundations we need to put in place immediately such as improving the bonds between workers and supervisors, training supervisors who have been thrown into these positions through attrition, improving the employee’s quality of life and managing progression career with a more strategic workforce plan. .

This is the time of year when we need to start developing our strategies for the coming year. I have always said that business plans should be clear, concise and simple and are most effective when written before a budget is established. Before coming to the drafting of the business plan, I quote Jim Collins, author of “Good to excellent”, who wrote: “Get the right people on board to the right place before anything else.”

Now that we have the right people in place, it is essential to examine the macroeconomic data. Leisure demand will continue to be strong, business/business travel will improve, as will group travel, and this will translate into a strong 2023 despite inflation, recession or stagflation. Follow these five steps to complete a basic business plan:

  1. Review trend reports, which will show where your hotel ranks as a whole competitively and what costs are incurred by each booking. Hotel supply and demand, the competitive environment, action plans and expected results must be specified. The action plan details who, what, when and all costs associated with each action. Keep it simple.
  2. Develop a budget that will streamline operations and create strategic opportunities for hotels. Since we just came out of a pandemic, be careful with assumptions.
  3. Coordinate multi-pronged marketing efforts by carefully reviewing market intelligence and market timing reports. Create and Stream ” I can not resist “ content for websites and e-blasts. Post to social media at least twice a week to “tell the story”. Make sure you have a public relations plan in place, with or without an agency to help you.
  4. Implement a targeted sales plan by reviewing competitor websites and all competitor social sites including Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Look at all previous cases and review major marketing reports. Build community relationships and explore creative partnership opportunities and talk to customers, as this leads to customer loyalty and provides timely information about people traveling.
  5. Review revenue management tactics by performing rigorous benchmarking, preparing accurate projections and developing a new responsive business mix. Positioning properties in the right channels allows us to increasingly provide customers with authentic connections. According to a recent study by the American Hotel & Lodging Association, many revenue systems are now leaning towards attribute-based purchases.

Digital Disruption

Mobile will continue to influence the industry, along with other technologies that hotel brands are incorporating into guest offerings. Texting guests before, during, and after tours is worth a try.

It’s no surprise that the future of the hospitality industry is powered by digital technologies. When we seek productivity, we use robotics, not to supplant jobs, but to make them more effective and efficient. Robots vacuuming hotel rooms and hallways allow housekeepers to avoid back injuries and stabilize room cleaning times.

Technology also helps keep everyone safe. For example, we have a room service robot that makes contactless deliveries directly to a customer’s room. Using mobile ordering technology can also help convert traditional food outlets into takeout and delivery outlets.

ITC Ltd will pursue the “right to the asset” strategy for its hotel business to ensure the diversified conglomerate remains competitive and contemporary, and continues to deliver superior performance, its chairman Sanjiv Puri said.

The Kolkata-based multi-conglomerate, which operates hotels under brands such as ITC and Welcome, also said it was exploring overseas markets for its hotel business, he said.

According to Puri, the tourism and hospitality industry is recovering from the pandemic and the company will push forward the split process and explore another structure.

“Once things are finalized and we have a final proposal, we will share it,” Puri told PTI when asked about the split in ITC’s hotel business.

Regarding the company’s plans to expand its hotel business overseas, he said that they “will pursue an asset strategy at some point, and a large number of hotels have entered Welcome Hotels. The new brand called “Storii” and “Momentous” will also start soon.

“We are also attracting interest from markets outside of India which we are exploring. As something comes up we will move forward,” he added.

Explaining the rationale for the alternative structure, he said a business exists “not only for today but also for tomorrow” and that the main task of management is to ensure that the business remains competitive, contemporary, agile and continues to deliver superior performance.

“How one organizes or structures oneself depends on the maturity of the business in a competitive environment. The hotel industry and the paper industry were separate businesses and they were canceled with a purpose. So, considering of our move to an asset right strategy in hotels, we thought it was best to look at alternative structures, so that’s the context,” he added.

When asked if the ITC would make a bid for the Ashoka Hotel, the president said the process had not yet started and that as it does, “it’s the time to respond”.

“Only by looking at the model can we decide whether to do (bid) or not. So we’ll see,” said Puri, who is also the CII’s vice president.

He leads a CII trade delegation to the United States. The delegation accompanies the Minister of Trade and Industry, Piyush Goyal.

The asset entitlement model refers to owning properties and managing for others. He is also considering the strategy of gradually adding rooms.

During the last fiscal year, the company introduced two new brands in its hospitality sector: “Mementos” in the luxury segment and “Storii” in the upscale segment.

With over 100 hotels in 70 destinations across six distinct brands, ITC’s hotel group incorporates India’s renowned tradition of hospitality and warmth, with world-class facilities and services.

One of America’s main economic engines, the The American hotel industry, generates 1,200 billion dollars in turnover, 3 million jobs, 395 billion dollars in wages and 659 billion dollars in GDP. The Gujarati Patels, who have a dominant presence in the hospitality landscape, contribute substantially to the above economic values.

Mahendra K. Doshi’s recently published book, ‘Surat to San Francisco: How the Patels from Gujarat Established the Hotel Business in California 1942-1960,’ [Hardcover, 338 pages, $39.95 by Trailblazers Publishing (www.patelhotelhistory.com), San Jose, Ca.]does an excellent historical analysis of how the Patels of Gujarat founded the Patel hotel business in 1942 and then expanded and consolidated it by introducing over 30 Patels to the Mission District of San Francisco by renting single occupancy hotels (“ORS”) cheap.

Patel Founders – Top Right – D. Lal, Bottom Left – Nanalal Patel and Bottom Right – Kanji Manchhu Desai

To my knowledge, this is the first book that traces the history of the Patel Hotel. Doshi should be admired for relying on the oral accounts of around 160 people. The book quotes the daughters of a Patel pioneer, Pushpa and Urmila Patel, “The book gives voice to those pioneers who are no longer with us, like our father, Ambalal Parbhu, whose stories will inspire our children.”

Doshi traces the genesis of the Patel Motel business beginning with three founders of Patel, all illegal farm workers, who took over a small, dilapidated ORS from a Japanese lady, who was forced to report to the internment camp during the Second World War. The Ford Hotel on 6th Street became the first Patel-operated hotel in America. Sacramento became the birthplace of a serendipitous phenomenon for hosting company Patel, the likes of which have not been seen since. The accidental hotelier, Kanji Manchhu Desai, saw it as a way to settle his compatriots.

Author Mahendra K. Doshi

In 1955 Desai moved to England, but the expansion of the Patel Hotel continued, led by Surati Patels, Bhula Vanmali Patel, Dahya Ratanji Patel, Dhanji Vakil Patel and 6 Khatris who came under the Luce-Celler Act which should be considered the defining moment in the Patels’ hospitality history as they continued to develop the hotel business, eventually buying instead of renting. By 1960, Patels had moved into motel operations not just in the Bay Area, but across the United States. There was a mad rush to get into the business with the arrival of new Patels under Walter McCarran law and the upheaval caused by Idi Amin in Africa that forced many to seek a livelihood in America.

Today the Patels are a dominant force in the business, their voice there is unmatched, their presence ubiquitous and their earnings in the billions, thanks to the 3 farmhands who changed the trajectory of how the Patels would make a living by America.

Hotel Perramont

Doshi’s book is a must read not only for hospitality professionals, but also for those who follow our diasporic history. It not only has over 150 pictures of the hoteliers and their wives but also some interesting anecdotes about the early Gujaratis and Patels.

Very few know that Haridas Thakordas Muzumdar, whom many Bengalis considered their own, was a Gujarati from Mahuva and an ardent Gandhian, and the first Republican Indian to run for a congressional seat in Iowa in 1956. A Gujarati firebrand created chaos for Canada. Govt. in Vancouver in 1911-1917. It was Chhagan Kheraj Verma from Porbandar.

Diving brief:

  • Rosen Hotels and Resorts, an Orlando-based hotel system, has preliminarily settled class action lawsuits brought by a plaintiff and 3,631 other employees through the Worker Retraining Adjustment and Notification Act. A judge approved the $2.3 million deal August 2nd.
  • According to the complaint, hotel employees were placed on temporary leave in April 2020 (Turner vs. Rosen Hotels and Resorts, Inc., no. 6:21-cv-00161 (MD Florida 22 January 2021)). They remained on furlough for six months without receiving notification of their employment status, according to the complaint. The workers suffered “job loss” in the mass layoff and did not receive the 60-day written notice to which they were entitled under the WARN Act, according to the complaint.
  • In addition to failing to provide the workers with notice to leave, the hotel system failed to provide them with pay or benefits for 60 days after their respective layoffs exceeded six months, according to the complaint.

Overview of the dive:

The The WARN Act requires employers of at least 100 full-time workers to provide 60 days’ notice if they plan to subject 50 or more people at a single site to job loss, which is defined as termination, layoff of more six months or a 50% or greater reduction in hours in each month of a six month period.

The law aims to help workers transition from their laid-off position to a new role. Under the Workforce Investment Act, each state has a rapid response team whose assistance is triggered upon receipt of a WARN Act notice. The team assists workers in their career transition by coordinating with the employer to provide job search and placement assistance and on-the-job or classroom training, among other resources.

WARN’s applicability can be tricky for employers; temporary, part-time and government employees are not protected by its provisions, for example, and workers are also excluded if they are offered a transfer to a site within reasonable commuting distance or if they suffer a break of up to six months. Additionally, an employer can lay off 50 to 499 workers at a site without triggering WARN Act requirements if that number is still less than one-third of its workforce.

The influence of COVID-19 on WARN law enforcement has been a question on the minds of employers following mass layoffs at the start of the pandemic – especially since the law provides an exception to the policy. 60 days’ notice for layoffs resulting from natural disasters. Recently, however, the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals estimated that the pandemic could not be considered a natural disaster for the purposes of the law.

By Ranjit Bhushan

Business decisions often make history. Pioneering business decisions have the power to spark economic growth, transform urban landscapes, and have an impact that lasts for generations, not just decades.

It was 1971 when Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, better known by his acronym JRD, as Chairman of the Tata Group, decided to sign on the proverbial dotted line to accept the Lake Palace Hotel in Udaipur on a lease term for Taj Hotels from the former royal family of Mewar.

It turned out to be a visionary move that breathed new life into the 400-year-old city of Udaipur – where the soul and spirit of the fearsome Maharana Pratap still reigns.

Write in the prestigious Quarterly on family businesses — from the Thomas Schmidheiny Center for Family Business at the Indian School of Business (ISB) in its July-September 2022 issue — Professor John Ward and Professor K Ramachandran paint a stark picture of the macro environment of 1971.” The abolition of private scholarships and special privileges granted by the Indian government in 1971 posed a major challenge to the former royal families. They lost income that was essential to maintain their lavish estates and fulfill their moral responsibilities as as guardians of their community,” notes the case study.

“The 75th descendant of the Mewar family, Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar, has taken up this challenge by converting their summer residence, the Lake Palace, into a heritage hotel. This was a pioneering effort which led to the conversion of many other royal properties into hotels,” he said.

According to ichltata.com, this provided an interesting point to join: JRD’s decision to partner with Lake Palace Hotel in 1971 marked the Taj Hotels’ first foray away from Bombay, now Mumbai.

Since 1903, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel has defined the scenic India Gate waterfront promenade at the Radio Club and its distinctive pier. For more than 60 years, the Taj Mahal Palace became not just a luxury hotel, but a cultural center, an exclusive venue where Bombay’s elite celebrated their personal and corporate ceremonies. Now, in 1971, the Chairman of the Tata Group took the bold step of taking the first step towards Udaipur, a sleepy heritage city that didn’t even have regular air connections to Bombay or Delhi!

The ISB case study (entitled ‘India’s Mewar Dynasty: Sustaining 76 Generations of Service and Custody’) highlights the existential challenges facing Maharana Bhagwat Singh. “The economic distress due to the abolition of private purses and the voluntary responsibility as “guardians” to take care of the dependents of the properties encouraged him to undertake this conversion. However, this transformation of the royal family into hoteliers was not easy. They lacked the professional skills to run the business. Therefore, Bhagwat Singh approached the Taj Group of Tatas in 1971 to operate the hotel on a lease basis. This association celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. Lake Palace has become India’s most unique luxury palace hotel,” he noted.

To mark 50 years of business association, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons visited Udaipur in October 2021. While thanking Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar, Chairman and Managing Director of Lake Palace Hotels & Motels Private Limited, d having entrusted the Indian hotel of the Tata Company Ltd. (IHCL) with the Palace, he recognized the architectural marvel and illustrious history of the Palace Island on Lake Pichola.

Business historians agree that IHCL’s partnership with Lake Palace Hotels & Motels, now in its sixth decade, is India’s longest running business partnership in the Indian private sector. It surpassed the famous collaboration between the Munjal family’s Hero Group and Honda Motor Company of Japan which lasted 26 years, between 1984 and 2010.

In recorded interviews, for the preparation of the ISB case study, Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar admitted that without the resources and expertise of the Taj Group, the Lake Palace Hotel would not have reached the iconic position it busy today.

“The Taj Lake Palace is a legendary icon of Udaipur. IHCL sensitively restored it to preserve its timeless elegance and unique history, while combining it with the conveniences of modern luxury. We are delighted to have this long and fruitful relationship with the Guardians of Indian Hospitality. My family and I look forward to this continued association and enhancement of the region’s tremendous tourism potential,” he said.

On the contribution of tourism and related industries to the economy of the city of Udaipur, although there is no complete validated data, industry experts in 2022 estimated the figure at 5,000 crore of rupees or about 700 million US dollars.

Nearly 30% of the population is directly affected by tourism, or 30,000 families according to informed estimates.

In January 2022, the number of daily air flights to Udaipur was 15; with air passengers almost touching the million mark in the pre-Covid era.

The same goes for the number of hotels: luxury hotels include Taj Fateh Prakash Palace, Shiv Niwas Palace, Oberoi Udai vilas, Leela Palace, Raffles Hotels and Resorts; at least 8 high-end hotels including Radisson Blu, Radisson Green, The Trident, The Lalit, Ramada, Devigarh among others.

Alumni, working at the Taj Lake Palace Hotel in the 1970s, recall charter flights from Bombay and New Delhi that brought high profile and wealthy guests to the hotel, often in a hot and sweaty state. Telephones were a battle of nerves while the power supply added to the challenges of everyday hospitality.

It is not just Udaipur, the state of Rajasthan and India that have benefited from JRD’s decision to incorporate authentic royal palaces as part of luxury hospitality. The Rambagh Palace in Jaipur was soon to become the next palace-hotel in the Taj Group’s bouquet of offerings in 1972. It made Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, a global destination, a status it continues to hold with more than 3 million inhabitants. passengers each year via its international airport.

“It is no truism that generations have benefited from the decision of my illustrious grandfather Maharana Bhagwat Singh and JRD Tata,” said Mr. Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, Executive Director of HRH Group of Hotels, Udaipur.

“Besides the former royal families, who converted their palaces in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, one must salute the great old men of the hospitality industry like JRD Tata, MS Oberoi, Capt Nair, PRS Oberoi and Ratan Tata, who ‘ built ‘chains of hotels across Rajasthan, brick by brick. They created the infrastructure and blitz marketing that gave Rajasthan’s tourism its identity, profitability and sustainability.Today, global hotel brands the most prestigious are here, rooted in our soil, thanks to the hard work of this previous generation,” he said.

In 1992, JRD Tata was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour; he is the only industrialist to have been honored with this prize.

Premier Inn has started construction on what it calls its first “all-electric” hotel.

The Swindon town center property has been designed without a natural gas connection and will instead be fully heated and powered by grid energy generated from renewable sources and by on-site photovoltaic (PV) cells.

The 195-room hotel will also feature air source heat pumps and new water heating technology from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

The property is being built on a vacant brownfield site in the city center and will offer a Thyme bar and restaurant, as well as 38 the group’s enriched Premier Plus rooms.

Premier Inn said eliminating natural gas from its property was key to its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2040.

“This is a significant challenge as we rely on natural gas to heat water in our hotel network and power many of our restaurant kitchens across the country,” said Alex Flach, Director of Development of Premier Inn in the UK.

“The new all-electric Premier Inn is designed to give us everything we need to run an operationally successful hotel. The combination of a thermally efficient building and on-site energy recovery and generation systems gave us the confidence to eliminate fossil fuels from the new Premier Inn.

“This is a bold and necessary proof of concept that has the potential to inform the specifications of our new hotels. With over 82,000 rooms currently available to our guests across the UK and Ireland, and the potential to expand our network to 110,000 rooms over time, the impact of what we learn from the hotel electric is huge.

Premier Inn owner Whitbread published its latest ESG report in Mayin which she pledged to accelerate the company’s net zero carbon goal from 2050 to 2040.
