PLYMOUTH – Best Western Plus Cold Spring The hotel, on Court Street between the city center and North Plymouth, is known for being in the right location and generally open at the right time. 2021 was to be the year of the turnaround after the ravages of 2020 on the economy and the world. Masks, vaccines, a national program to get there. And, yes indeed, business picked up right away. But a funny thing happened on the way to the reception.

As with so many businesses this year, staff, not guests, has become the challenge of 2021.

“We have had a very good season,” said Kevin Martin. Martin is the longtime assistant general manager of Best Western, whose core staff have pulled the hotel through a busy summer with not even half of its normal staff.

“The apps just weren’t there this year,” he said. “Normally, in addition to high school or college students, you would also see international students looking for a second job. Others too have turned to us for a second job. But these have been non-existent throughout. the season.”

BSU professors say labor shortage is a sign of a shift in power between business and workers

Martin needs breakfast shift workers to greet guests, distribute breakfast foods, keep the dining room clean, and keep supplies in stock. And he needs help at the front desk, which typically has around seven people on duty handling online reservations, phone calls, arrivals and departures, and customer service requests.

Northampton Community College students looking for a four-year bachelor’s degree in hospitality management can now add Penn State Berks or the School of Hospitality Management at the College of Health and Human Development at Penn State University Park to their list of schools possibilities in which they can continue their university studies in hotel management.

Executives from Penn State and NCC signed a transfer and articulation agreement this spring. The agreement establishes an agreement for the articulation of registrations from program to program in the management of reception.

NCC students who successfully complete the requirements for an associate program within four years of first enrolling in NCC are eligible to enter one of Penn State’s programs (at Penn State Berks or the School of Hospitality Management of Penn State University Park) with junior status in the undergraduate program of either program.

“This articulation agreement is a wonderful new addition to our existing partnership with Penn State, creating yet another opportunity for our students,” said Mark Erickson, president of NCC.

“What makes me happiest is that this agreement further broadens access to higher education, which is at the heart of our mission. We are very proud to create this seamless path from NCC-Penn State to a bachelor’s degree in a field that is coming back stronger than ever.

Hospitality management represents a sector of the economy that is poised to experience significant growth, providing enormous opportunities for students no matter where they choose to complete their studies. In a March 2021 Forbes magazine article, hospitality industry professionals were surveyed and more than half of respondents predicted 2022 to be the year of full travel recovery. The summer reservation volume in the United States in 2021 is 110% higher than the summer in the States at the same time last year. The resilient hospitality industry is poised for the demand for travel that is expected to come with more vaccines available as the lockdown and other restrictions are eased.

For more information on the Hospitality Management program at NCC, contact David Schweiger, Director, at 610-332-8660 or dschweiger@northampton.edu, or visit www.northampton.edu/hospitality; at Penn State Berks, contact Jennifer Wakemen at jvp5@psu.edu; at Penn State University Park, contact David Rachau, academic advisor in the School of Hospitality Management, or Chris Arbutina of the College of Health and Human Development Center for Student Advising and Engagement.

Staying in a hotel can be a luxurious experience to relax and rejuvenate. But this traveler avoids being pampered and instead plays the housekeeper.

When you stay in a hotel, you usually expect people to clean up after you. Pressing the door handle panel from ‘do not disturb’ to ‘come right in’, many travelers expect freshly pressed and neatly tucked away linens, eloquent pillows and decor, fragrant soaps, a mini -filled fridge and, not to mention, the little chocolates they place on your pillow after housekeeping has made your bed.

Upon checkout, you don’t crash out of the room, but neither do you do a deep cleaning, unless you’re Darren Dowling, who takes the extra step as a hotel guest.

Dowling, from the UK, shared a photo with Facebook, showing off his stripped bed and the sheets he has neatly folded at the foot of it – sending social media plummeting, arguing over guest protocols.

“I always try to leave a hotel room like this,” he wrote in the caption. “Is this the right or the wrong thing to do?” “

Dowling doesn’t just tidy up, he undresses the bed entirely.
Darren Dowling / Facebook

The post garnered over 1,000 likes and 400 comments, many of which debated the concept of being too clean and courteous after stay.

While many disagreed, saying people are paid to clean up after hotel residents, others said they do so out of courtesy to cleaners as well.

“As a housekeeper, it makes me very happy when clients do this, saves us extra work and makes things easier,” commented Chloe Twinning.

“It’s not right or wrong… just weird,” someone else wrote.

Dowling, known as Dazza Online, hit back at people who haven’t taken the extra step of cleanliness, commenting, “” They get paid to clean it. “The police are paid to stop the killings, but it’s not going well, is it.

In addition to people arguing over hotel checkout etiquette, some people have joked that they would rather leave their sheets rolled up and look like a corpse or some other offensive shape.

As the post grew in interaction, the housekeepers weighed in their two cents on what not to do, that you were cleaning up after yourself: don’t make the bed again.

“Some people are trying to be helpful and make the bed again,” wrote another user, “but we just have to go in and take the bed out anyway.”

Despite waiting for a record number of freshmen to start classes today, Indiana University has enough rooms in Bloomington to accommodate all students enrolled to live in university accommodation this fall.

By reopening dorms after renovations, building a new residential center, and renting out local apartments, IU should avoid previous scenarios where students had to sleep in dorm rooms or hotel rooms.

According to Sara Ivey Lucas, who oversees residential life at IU Bloomington, students won’t see a repeat of the spillover issues of years past.

“(There will be) no overflow housing in the traditional way people might have lived in 2007 or 2011, some of the last times we did,” she predicted last week. “So (the students) don’t go to the living rooms. “

The hotel quarantine is a measure many countries insist on to prevent the spread of COVID-19, especially for travelers from a country on the red list. Many destinations like Australia, UK, Hong Kong, New Zealand, China and Singapore have mandatory quarantines in place. Travelers are typically required to quarantine themselves in a hotel between 10 and 14 days, at their own expense.

If you plan to visit Hong Kong or back in the region, you will have to isolate yourself in a hotel for a mandatory two-week quarantine. The Hong Kong government has also released a list of 16 designated quarantine hotels.

Now that you have to spend some time in quarantine in a hotel, why not make it relaxing instead of feeling trapped? Here are some tips that will help you survive your stay in a hotel room.

Book a room with a view

Anna Didenko / Unsplash

While the thought of spending your quarantine period in a single room might not be pleasant, booking a room with a decent view can help. From the list of quarantine hotels, choose the one where you can book your stay that will make you feel like you’re spending your quarantine in a single room. Even better if it comes with a balcony where you can sit and sip your coffee.

Wake up with a purpose

Make a to-do list
Image credit: Glenn Carstens-Peters / Unsplash

Plan how you want to spend each day in your room. Start with a workout, followed by a relaxing session in the shower try to accomplish something, even the smallest of tasks matters. You can also make a to-do list before you go and start the next day on a thoughtful note. Plus, sleeping early and waking up on time sets the tone for your day. Getting a good 7-8 hours of sleep is crucial for recharging your battery, especially during your quarantine in a room.

All of this not only gives you direction, but also a certain degree of control over your day. Same studies emphasized the importance of establishing a routine.

Get some exercise

Exercise
Image Credit: Conscious Design / Unsplash

Exercise kills two birds with one stone it keeps away both the blues and the fat. Workouts are known to release hormones for happiness endorphins, serotonin and noradrenaline. Choose a physical activity that you enjoy and that you can do in your room every day. This will ensure a happy quarantine period.

Dance, pilates, acroyoga, aerobics – choose from a plethora of options to stay fit and happy while you quarantine yourself in a room. According to a item published by Harvard Medical School, training also reduces stress in addition to releasing hormones for happiness.

Soak up some vitamin D

Hotel quarantine

Take the train early in the morning, that is, try to catch some early morning sun. You can also meditate or practice yoga while you take your dose of vitamin D. So when making your hotel reservation, try to get an east facing room.

The sunlight will instantly brighten your mood and energize you to face the day. It is also good for the health. a item by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) also corroborated the same.

Stay connected

Hotel quarantine

It has become important, especially as the world is fighting COVID-19, that we stay in touch with our loved ones. Use the hotel’s free wifi (another detail to remember when booking the room) and take time each day to talk to friends and family during your hotel quarantine. Whether through messages, phone calls, or video calls, feel free to share your thoughts with someone you trust.

A Harvard research even says that reaching out and connecting with people ensures longevity and happiness.

Digital detox

Put this phone away and rest your eyes. Yes, you heard right. Less screen time comes with a host of advantages which include improved sleep and attention span which is good for your health. Research has also shown that those who refrain from using social media are less likely to develop symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Instead of scrolling through your News Feed, solve a puzzle or finally read that book you couldn’t start.

Take care of yourself

What could be better than a relaxing day snacking on a bowl of fruit with a sheet mask on your face? Start the treatment with a warm bath and continue to show some TLC to your skin and hair. You can also prepare a hair mask to pamper your hair. Put on some good music and let the quarantine rituals begin.

Eat healthy

Balanced diet
Image credit: Anna Pelzer / Unsplash

While in hotel quarantine, try to choose healthy options for your meals. Give in to temptations for your breakfast, lunch and dinner from time to time it is fine. Our forties prompted us to seek solace in junk food, but it would be wise not to let our healthy eating habits ruin this time around.

There are many drawbacks to including junk food and processed foods in your diet, including obesity and lethargy. Make sure your breakfast, lunch, and dinner satisfy your hunger and nourish you during your quarantine period.

If you are bored of hotel food, you can also look for local delivery services that can provide you with healthy and tasty meal options.

Cultivate a skill

learn a skill

With plenty of time on your hands, why not learn something new during your quarantine period? You can choose from a plethora of options available online, from guitar lessons to cooking lessons. Or use this space in the room to take a line dancing class.

You can also start working on something that you have been planning on doing for a very long time but couldn’t find the time.

As you prepare to quarantine yourself in a hotel, make sure even minor details before you get to town. Check your room reservation, check all the services that are part of your package including free services, food situation and hidden costs, among others. All of these details are important for a peaceful stay in quarantine.

The developers say they plan to revive and reopen a Mississippi hotel that was built in 1927 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The groundwork for the renovation of the Eola Hotel in downtown Natchez is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2022, the Democratic Natchez reported.

The project is called Project Phoenix, a symbol of the once popular luxury hotel “rising from the ashes,” Mayor Dan Gibson said at a press conference Thursday.

Endeavor Corp. is the development group behind the project. Virginia attorney Robert Lubin bought the Eola in 2014 and retains partial ownership.

Hayes Dent is President of Public Strategies and a subsidiary of Endeavor. Dent said he and Endeavor owner Randy Roth worked with a major hotel chain to make the project possible, but did not name the chain.

The group has also partnered with Kevin Preston of the Magnolia Bluffs Casino & Hotel. Dickie Brennan, the owner of Dickie Brennan’s Steakhouse in New Orleans, will be in charge of food and beverage operations at the New Eola.

The Eola was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The hotel reached its peak in the early 1930s, when Natchez initiated pilgrimage tours to pre-war homes. It ceased its activities as a hotel in 2014.

Has he really been sitting like this for a decade?

Sure enough, when Daytona Beach Shores first filed a lawsuit to bring down the Treasure Island Hotel, aka Treasure Island Inn, aka Treasure Island Hotel, as a nuisance property, that was in 2011.

Even then, the trial had been brewing for some time, but it was legally complicated. About a dozen defendants had to be named because it was not known who owned them – all these liens, bankruptcies, creditors, suits and counter-suits.

Now, as News-Journal editor, Jim Abbott recently reported, the city may in fact want it.

Mark Lane:An abandoned beach hotel is not a treasure

From 2017:New hotel planned for the Treasure Island site

The 11-story resort resembles something of a war zone, a graffiti-covered skeletal outline of an old resort. It wasn’t a zombie house that was quietly rotting and destroying the appearance of a neighborhood. It was an imposing ruin on the main street of the city. A monument to storms, economic downturns and the vicissitudes of an unstable tourist and real estate market. An essential warning to any potential investor in the region.

Mark Lane

The place has been dark since the 2004 hurricanes. Then-owners Bray & Gillespie, a real estate company that once owned 35 beachfront hotels, said they would reopen the place by June 2005. This is not the case.

Instead, there were hurricane punches one-two-three and the bursting of the great Florida real estate bubble followed by the Great Recession.

It was all the sadder since the place was once a prime property. A place that illustrated a period of high water for family tourism here. A hotel that could stand up to the big hotel chains. An all inclusive vacation experience with a Tiki bar, two swimming pools, conference rooms, a gift shop and the Billy Bone Tavern where Patti and Marti performed your requests every night. There was a large entrance with a huge Polynesian-style wooden roof, shading the path to a spacious hall.

Talks are at an “advanced stage” to transform a legendary old nightclub in downtown Newport into a budget hotel.

EasyHotel confirmed on Monday that reviews are underway after the company’s franchise partner obtained approval to build an easyHotel in Clarence Place, in place of TJ’s former club.

The iconic building, which has remained empty since the death of owner John Sicolo in 2010, will now be transformed, according to the developers. A deadline has not yet been set for the start of work.

In 2018 WalesOnline reported when the development of the new hotel on the site was first mentioned .

Artist’s impression of what the old TJs building could look like in Clarence Place, Newport

The hotel in the Grade II listed building on the street will house around sixty rooms, as well as two storefronts at the bottom of the building.

The roof and rear extension will be demolished while an additional story will be built, bringing the Clarence Place site to four stories.

At its peak the venue has hosted many internationally renowned groups including Oasis, Sonic Youth, Hole and the Manic Street Preachers , leading some in the music industry to dub Newport “the new Seattle”.

TJ’s was also where Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain allegedly asked his girlfriend Courtney Love to marry him – although, although Cobain and Love were both present the night his band Hole performed in 1991, the proposal reported has since been refuted.

Earlier this year easyHotel has opened a new Cardiff location based at Fitzalan Place in the city center, which opened in March .

On Monday, a spokesperson for easyHotel and easyHotel Franchise told WalesOnline: “We are in advanced talks with an established easyHotel Franchise partner who has been granted a building permit to bring the easyHotel brand to Clarence Place, Newport. by converting this iconic building in the heart of the city. Our partner-developer is currently evaluating the scope and cost of converting what will be a 60-bed hotel. The exact times have yet to be confirmed. “
