Talks advance to turn legendary former club TJ’s into budget hotel
Talks are at an “advanced stage” to transform a legendary old nightclub in downtown Newport into a budget hotel.
EasyHotel confirmed on Monday that reviews are underway after the company’s franchise partner obtained approval to build an easyHotel in Clarence Place, in place of TJ’s former club.
The iconic building, which has remained empty since the death of owner John Sicolo in 2010, will now be transformed, according to the developers. A deadline has not yet been set for the start of work.
In 2018 WalesOnline reported when the development of the new hotel on the site was first mentioned .
The hotel in the Grade II listed building on the street will house around sixty rooms, as well as two storefronts at the bottom of the building.
The roof and rear extension will be demolished while an additional story will be built, bringing the Clarence Place site to four stories.
At its peak the venue has hosted many internationally renowned groups including Oasis, Sonic Youth, Hole and the Manic Street Preachers , leading some in the music industry to dub Newport “the new Seattle”.
TJ’s was also where Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain allegedly asked his girlfriend Courtney Love to marry him – although, although Cobain and Love were both present the night his band Hole performed in 1991, the proposal reported has since been refuted.
Earlier this year easyHotel has opened a new Cardiff location based at Fitzalan Place in the city center, which opened in March .
On Monday, a spokesperson for easyHotel and easyHotel Franchise told WalesOnline: “We are in advanced talks with an established easyHotel Franchise partner who has been granted a building permit to bring the easyHotel brand to Clarence Place, Newport. by converting this iconic building in the heart of the city. Our partner-developer is currently evaluating the scope and cost of converting what will be a 60-bed hotel. The exact times have yet to be confirmed. “
